    Default possible broken motor

yesterday on the way to work just doing some casual driving no boosting or anything then all of a sudden a terrible knocking starting to come from my motor. i look down to the cel flashing. i immediately check and my sure my clutch and trans is good since i just installed the new clutch 500 miles ago. those were fine. i was only a few miles from work and knew the damaged was already done so i drove the last few miles.

i work at a goodyeaer tire store so when i arrived i scanned the car and came up with low signal on maf, and no activity from rear o2 sensor. neither of those would cause a flashing cel. well i got it towed home and took any other look today. the knocking is definetly from the motor and not the trans so i quickly pulled the valve cover see what it looks like and everything was fine. drained the oil and filter ran a magnet through it and picked up some metal flakes. since im now assuming its a spun bearing i decided to pull the front clip off and get ready to pull the motor.

i took the timing covers off and noticed my tensioner was very very loose, so i was like shit, timing is messed up prob tapped some valves. im extremely pissed at this cuz i just did the timing belt and water pump in march not even 6000 miles ago. well i spin it over to line up the timing marks and the engine is in perfect time. weird right? when i spin the crank its extremely difficult. so something is sticking or bent or something.

well this is where i am right now and will be doing further diagnosis after work. ill be doing a compression test and leakdown test see if any valves are bent. and my friend is bring me a scope so ill throw that into the cylinder and oil pan see if we see anything unsual. maybe built motor sooner than i thought

well im about 98% sure i spun a bearing. i started tonight pulling stuff off the motor preparing to pull it out. i ordered a engine hoist and stand hopefully its here by the weekend so i can pull it out and tear it down. im thinking about buying the built block package that 034 motorsports sells, going with the 2.0 stroker kit and over bore and with a gt3076 turbo. not dead set with the turbo yet i gotta look into the power it makes and see if my clutch will hold.

Yea man I'm gonna hit him up now. He was really helpful when I ordered my clutch and def knows this motor better than anybody else. I'm looking to build a 2.0l stroker with 400awhp see what he can do for me.

I got everything disconnected except for the axles and mounts so ill be pulling the motor and trans tonight teardown will begin tom.

Shoot me an email when you want prices on parts. If you want the 034 engine build you can get that thru me too.

The motor should be coming out tonight if the rain isn't too hard, then ill pull the oil pan off and look and make sure its a spun bearing.

Well got some good and bad news. I pulled the motor last night and jiggled the flywheel and pressure plate assembly and iT moved. Apparently after using lock tight and a torque wrench the flywheel bolts still found a way to come loose. So atleast I don't have to drop tons of money to rebuild my, but my car is still slow lol.

So the only thing I can say from this experience is if you just had a clutch and flywheel installed and your car starts sounds like a diesel and its knocking, chances are its a loose flywheel. The weird thing was I didn't feel I vibrations in my clutch pedal, that's one of the main reasons we thought it was in the motor.

If it was properly installed and torqued to spec than the only thing that could have shaken it loose is an imbalanced rotating assembly in the motor.

As a precaution, check your serpentine belt pulley and timing belt crankshaft pulley for proper torque as you are putting this all back together.

Who installed the flywheel and clutch?

I installed the clutch and flywheel myself. I know for a fact I did everything right. Ill check the crank pulley torque when I'm reinstalling everything. But they only thing that is confusing me is that the timing belt tensioner is loose. I don't know how either its onlyt got 6k miles on it
