    Default B6 engine whine

    Hi guys

Im new on this site. I have a noise coming from the front of my S4 B6 engine mainly when its cold. It has now become worse and now seems to whine when the weather is warm too. It does disappear when the engine is hot.
What worries me is that the louder the noise the slower the car feels. when warmed up she runs well - or maybe its just my imagination because im worried about accelerating when cold. She also drinks fuel and the exhaust blows out light condensation always like she is over fuelling. The car does need a valve cover gasket tho which could be to do with it.

ive heard theres a TSB for the pulley - am not sure if this will be a cure or whether its something more serious - any ideas?

    Thanks

Listen to some of the video's of B6/B7's on youtube, it's probably the normal whine. Mine has done it since I've owned it (42k miles to now 53k miles). Shouldn't be the serpentine belt tensioner with that few miles (right?) It's more of a groan than whine right?

I really don't know what it is either but would guess power steering pump. Some folks on here will surely know though...

thanks for the replies. Yes would really appreciate a clip to compare the noise. I will try and post one asap. it is a fairly deep whine that sounds almost like a bus
pulling away but not as loud.. you can hear it from a distance.

Does your noise go when the car get hot? i have noticed a line on the serp belt down the middle. Any ideas how much they cost to replace?
    (car has done 55k miles).

The "normal" whine are the timing gears and really only audible at low RPMs, not likely what the OP is hearing.

The pitch is almost the same as the secondary air pump (SAP), however much louder, like a SAP with bad bearings.

This is a video of my car on cold startup, if you skip to 2:00 you'll hear the SAP shut off. It's hard to hear the SAP running over the groan, but if you listen carefully you can hear it.

This is a really bad SAP:

Only normal whine you should be hearing is during cold weather, between 1500-2500RPM and only while engine is still warming up.
Like other have said, that's a secondair air.

Yeah mine has done it and gotten louder... but with the intake and the vented filter for the SAI it got louder only as I expected.
