Default Dyno testing - the beginning. ***POST CLEANING DYNO ADDED***

Here is some data I’m sharing with everyone. My intent is to dyno my car before the valves are cleaned, then right after the valves are cleaned and finally one more time once I have the JHM tune + piggies installed.

Today I had the first step done. My numbers are UNCORRECTED and I have a print out with the results. The shop says they normally use 1.15% as a correction factor (the lower of the two options) but because their weather buddy thingy that indicates ambient temp/bar pres etc is broken they are leaving everything uncorrected. I’m also sharing video for your viewing pleasure. The numbers themselves are not that important, the real fun stuff will come to light once I get the second & third runs done. Then we’ll be able to compare deltas etc. I realize that this isn’t an exact science because I’m not in a temp controlled cell and there will be some minor ambient temp changes most likely. This testing should still be fairly accurate.

Keep in mind there are no dyno tricks taking place, the third party dyno facility has no vested interest in my numbers. They are not doing the valve cleaning nor are they the ones who will be installing my JHM tune. With that said, here are the details from today’s dyno pulls:

Plugged in the facilities address into a weather/topical map site & got the following info based on when I was at the shop:
Altitude = 89.65 feet above Sea Level (give or take)
    Time = 3:46PM
    Ambient temp = 59 outside – roughly 66 inside

4 or 5 pulls, all done in 4th gear iirc. First 2 or 3 pulls were done with the ESP partially off (accident on operators part) and the “S” mode button OFF. Last pull was done with ESP full off and “S” mode button ON. I'm not implying the "S" button does a damn thing for the dyno, just sharing what took place. I am basically stock – only mods (listed in sig) are the K&N drop in filter and the Tubi mufflers. Vids & scan of dyno chart below:

Scan is of the 3rd vs. 4th (last) pull I believe.

Videos: (I officially suck at trying to trim/crop videos. I helped you guys out a little by adding music over the commentary...well most of it anyway. Of course I left the pulls themselves raw with no music during the pull so you could hear the exhaust. Yes my car is filthy, I'm sick as a dog right now and couldn't muster the energy to wash it today. The vids do no justice to the actual sound. Probably because I'm using a Flip.)

    Fun starts at 1:55

Ideally I'd like to take it to the track to measure against the three variables too but it's not realistic for me at this time. If that changes however, I'll post the numbers.

    That's it.

Notice the "nice" flat spot from 6,200 forward. It climbs a tiny bit but not enough imo.(HP)
The TQ dropped off a little sooner than I expected. I was anticipating it to remain flat for a longer duration.

Looking forward to the delta after the cleaning.

Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to see the results after cleaning and then again after a JHM tune.

lol. Oppps. I forgot, its been a while. I mean the math clearly shows that your wasting your money on cleaning.

Pretty decent numbers for a Dyno Dynamics, and I agree would have expected that hp line to peak closer to redline rather than plateau when it did. Can't wait to see the results, thanks for sharing.

On a serious note...I've convinced my dealer to do one gratis.

I was shocked, but everyone knows we can't put too much faith in dyno numbers. Regardless it's a good measuring stick for deltas. Plus, if I ever do make it to the track we can see if it translates.

    Thanks Scotty. Your turn

Voltron - for the cleaning, I'd be very pleased with 10whp+. Many say that is uber conservative but I'm skeptical to a certain degree. I'm "hoping" for 25whp but that is a big hope.

Absolutely. However, I'd never heard of a DD read "optimistically". I'd bet those cooler temps played a big part in that and would have been curious what your timing correction showed during that run.

Hopefully you pick up a bit at the top end from the cleaning, but I'm more interested in the change from tuning and pre cat delete.

Me too - maybe next time I'll bring my vag cable and laptop.

That will be fun to see as well, honestly, the CB is more important to me at the moment.

As soon as the tune is available, I'll get it, jump on the dyno and report back.

Nice work, appreciate you ponying up the money to get the dyno runs done for the benefit of the community.

OK. Just read through the JHM tune thread. Man this things been dragging on since January huh? Do you have any idea if it's close at all or are we all just guessing at this point?

^Dan has had his RS4 in a bodyshop for over a month iirc. Now that he's got it back the tune should be on an accelerated pace. They've had a few cars running beta files for months now, and I know one of them was running very quick ..

I think JHM has never claimed to always be the 'first' to the market...but they do seem to be (overwhelmingly) the best. That's why guys are so patient.

NY07RS4...could I trouble you to log your car? I'll send you a PM outlining it. Before and after cleaning would be cool. It will help to compare some simple stuff to your dyno results and if necessary some performance results.

Just got the car back (literally 35 minutes ago.) All I had a chance to do is drive it home from the dealer. Tomorrow wifey & I are leaving for PA and taking her car so I won't have any real data points to share until I return...data points will most likely be late next week. Initial impression, I ran it to redline in 2nd & 3rd and to be honest I only felt a little bit of difference in the "kick" after 5500rpm. Could be a number of things; one the oil temps were high at 230...tech just got finished "road testing it" lol and it seemed heat soaked; second thing is maybe the ECU does need to adjust? I'm not sure but LJH mentioned it.

I had quite a few things done while there; valve clean, BG FI service, oil change, fuel additive, potientometer sensor replaced in bank 2...I'll try and get out a bit later tonight once the car has cooled a bit and I have finished packing for my trip. The ambient temps will help a bit too. If I have time I'll bring the laptop and the vag tool to do some 'after' logs of 3rd gear pulls. Next week I'll get on the dyno and have that delta to share as well.

Did you not change the spark plugs and air filter while there?

I would have definitely changed the plug and oil right after the BG service.

The 1st time (12 months ago) I had the BG service done I had them change the plugs. I didn't even realize they were doing the BG service this time, I found out while reading the work order when picking up the car. My plugs are maybe 10K old so i don't have a problem replacing them myself next week. I have a K&N air filter so I'll remove, clean and re-install when I'm back from my trip next week.

The oil was of course changed (especially after a valve cleaning.)

Update to my first impression. I was DEAD wrong. Holy crap! I drove for over two hours and covered close to 80 miles. Half way through the ride I took it to some "closed course" roads and let her rip a bit. The kick above 5K is definitely MUCH more noticeable and even the speed at which the engine revs seems quicker. I felt like I had to grab gears sooner than typical to avoid hitting the fuel cut-off.

I'm psyched to log this thing now that the valves are cleaned to see the delta. More info to follow late next week.

I would definitely change the spark plugs. I replaced them right after the BG clean and they looked hideous upon inspection.

I was in the garage messing around and came across the batch of plugs I replaced at 54k [1st CB clean (3rd set since new)]. I could scrape a thin layer of carbon off the top, thats on 15k of life.

I got the NGK laser platinum this time around. Not sure if it does anything for performance as I always do other things at the same time.

Clean the K&N filter and do some more logs. I am eager to see the improvements across the blocks and times.

    Quick Update: 12/1/10

Dyno post valve clean netted a 15WHP increase.

    See vid below.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-u-sGmyNSN8[/ame]

Guess the sticky rock hard CB deposits makes a difference huh?

Details - same ambient temp as last dyno runs (that worked out well), same everything. Only difference is there is 100% humidity today, raining f'ing elephants and hippos today on LI.

I didn't do any 3rd gear logs post cleaning yet. I promise to though and will share my pre & post valve cleaning logs.

P.S. I forgot my flip recorder so Kai from Elite was kind enough to record and post this on my behalf.

good to see more information for the community. So about 5% of peak HP recovered.
Would be nice to see the difference along the curve

these RS4 pre/post carbon clean hp graphs look like the B8 S4 pre/post tune graphs (lesser delta, but same idea...from 5500 and on the inhibition is removed)

Good data, thanks for taking the time and spending the money to show some results of the carbon.

Do you plan on doing a cleaning "regularly"? Every 10K maybe?

I have that info, I'll scan the dyno sheet and post it here a little later.

    No problem

Yes I do, annually or every 10K - 12K, whichever happens first. I do hope there is a "fix" in the near future but if not I will be tackling this on my own going forward. I doubt I can get Audi to take care of it again gratis.

lol. Oppps. I forgot, its been a while. I mean the math clearly shows that your wasting your money on cleaning.
It's funny, we joke about the cb build up so much, there are gonna be some newbs that go "well I keep seeing people on EA say that the cb isn't a real problem" haha

But seriously some great info and glad you took the time and money to do this.

Nice job Paul; Thanx for the info!!!

Not sure if you already posted it, but how many miles are on the car now? At the rate I am accumulating miles, I think a cleaning every 2yrs or so should work out just fine for me.

Need to take her out this weekend, and get everything warmed up, and circulating. I haven't driven her since the meet. Construction started on my house that same week, and I've mainly been driven the other car, and the SUV for my HD/Lowes runs.

Ha, I could see that happening to someone who is not familiar with the CB issue.

Not a problem, hopefully it will help others make an informed decision with some proof behind it. Makes it a bit easier to spend the money when you know it will do some good.

    Thanks bud.

I have been putting miles on her like crazy. She has almost 49K already!

Whoa That is a long time to not drive her. I hear ya on the other vehicles. I sold my 'extra' ride right around the same time I bought this car. I rarely use the wife's SUV and I'm a bit spoiled because if I ever need to borrow a pick-up or a towing vehicle I can via my brother. His driveway and garages are like a dealership lot lol. He has many vehicles...

lmao - I had a feeling you were going to jump all over the results with a post like the above one.

I hear ya, it was a bit frustrating to read all those posts by him regarding the CB. No problem man, glad I could help the community out.

Thanks - me too. The EPL tune looks interesting. Would love to see some 1/4 times from them or the tune owners themselves. I remember EPL from the Porsche tuning world. In fact an old competitor of theirs in CT no less gave them props. That says something when your competition doesn't bad mouth you. I'm up in the air a bit about the tune decision. In a perfect world I'd be allowed to test each for a month and then make a decision.

Very nice, once you post the dyno sheets, if you are interested, I can calculate a rough area under the curve increase.

Don't for a second even think twice. The EPL car had exhaust and didn't make very good TQ. its no better then the giac choice and the GIAC dyno was on 91octain. hell even the APR tune has better results.

in the end its all the same dyno game looking to draw you in. That is the same thing that caught the S4 guys. At this point it would IMHO just be silly to not go jhm. with all there results so far just at the track its obviously the best choice. While GIAC EPL might have done 1 car on a dyno and then put out some dyno sheet. JHM has 4+ cars that have all gone to the track
If you hated me on AZ your really going hate me here on Euroaddiction.

Don't hate me, hate that you accept so little from yourself

I don't speak English that well so, I do apologize for somethings I might not understand. I'm from Germany so, I will try hard...... I also don't speak stupid real well either, but for that language I don't care to learn
