Funny you start this thread, I was going to post one this morning to the same effect...
I'm curious about the intake spacers in particular... Krypt, I thought I read somewhere you have them, but they're not on the car yet...please keep us posted...specifically about the hi-pressure fuel line clearance. I'll probably call JHM in the meantime and discuss it with them directly. I need to do another CB clean in the near future and why not slap those on in the process![]()

I think the other question is:
"Any S4 guys now thinking about stepping up to the RS4 game now that JHM is in it? (and RS4 prices have finally started to come down)"
Honestly, I had kind of thought about it. Before JHM was in the game with the RS4, there was little desire to go to it as I just couldn't stand the thought of being in a "dead" market with no new product development. I love the appeal and idea of the RS4, but it just seemed like it'd been neglected, and I personally couldn't consider it as a car with little to no improvements on the horizon. But with some of the new plans JHM has in the works and their accomplishments already (!!!), I don't think it'd be too outlandish to see a B7 S4 guy jump up to the RS4 and start giving it the JHM treatment.

Dave (Krypt) is waiting on those parts to arrive then he is having a gtg at his place to install the JHM bits. I'm really looking forward to this and hoping i can make it.
I have plans to add some more JHM parts...in the spring most likely...![]()

I will be in the market for the JHM LW Flywheel and Clutch this spring. I will do the spacer aswell and then probably clean the Carbon and Dyno then to see where I am at. I still think JHM should have done a matching rear Brake upgrade aswell. I already have the Alcons on the front and had JHM make a custom matching rear set, but, honestly they would look even better if they had a larger Rotor with a Caliper reloction. I did hear something about a slient ( NO Whine) S/C system for our cars. I would be interested in that because I am in Love with the pitches and sounds I have now.
Does the RS have rear gears? Would changing those ratios help acceleration?
^ With a our mechanical awd system you have to change both differentials to change the ratio's. I think the RS4 already has a true 4.11 (maybe not, can't remember for sure), so really there's not much room to go if it continues as a DD. The S4 is a fair bit less though and could benefit, but it's probably not worth the time/costs to do that.
I would highly recommend doing the JHM tune for the RS4. I think the guys that get that are really gonna be impressed by the changes in the car.

the spacers are ready to go...(a bunch are manufactured and sitting in their shop according to an S4 owner who was there the other day) but I think they're still a little while away from retailing them for whatever reason. They're pretty god damned thorough, which is great for us, but it's tough to wait. Like their S4 supercharger. Like the RS4 tune. etc.
If I owned an RS4, I'd hands down get
tune
spacers
2.75" downpipes + 2.75" exhaust
It's really a shame, but B7 RS4 parts ex-JHM is B6/7 S4 all over again. All the guys with S4 APR and Milltek 2.25" exhausts and downpipes with 4 cats got just about no performance. Then JHM brought out 2.5"+2.5" x-pipe rationale to give suitable flow to the car. BANG...big gains, especially when JHM tuned. Unfortunately those original guys who bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff didn't want to spend again...so many sold their S4 (and many of them bought RS4s!)
That's what's happening with the exhausts/tunes for the RS4...they're all 2.5". WTF is the rationale behind that? Because that's what came stock? Maybe guys want RS4 exhaust for sound alone (and the milltek sounds incredible) but damn....I'd want my $4,000 (tune/dps/cb) to add some hp!
It'll be fun to watch what happens. It'll take time I reckon...just as it did with the S4. There will be tons of RS4 guys who sell their cars (already are) due to impatience with their 2.5" exhausts and basic tunes. The next wave of guys will be the ones who benefit from JHM parts development. I just hope the business is big enough...there aren't many RS4s out there.
as mbg said, the RS4 gearing is excellent for acceleration. Optimal. It's one of the main reasons that, despite drivetrain losses and a weight handicap, it's able to hang with an E9X M3 up to 1320 feet. Oversimplifying, but the gearing and the 8250 redline are great tricks up the RS4's sleeve. quattro was able to optimize some things (but certainly not the exhaust, since they're under emissions pressure).
The good thing is that it's still real early for the RS4, so I'm sure you'll see some cool stuff from Lathrop California in good time.
Serious question...
Why would the RS benefit more from a 2.75" as opposed to the S4 with a 2.5? Same displacement....just different fuel delivery....not sure why the 2.5 would be bad on the RS and ok on the S4.....is it just due to the RPM differences between the motors? the engine (as an air pump) is still moving the same volume...![]()
I think saying the RS4 hangs with the M3 in the 1/4 is quite a stretch if I've ever heard one. The record RS4 1/4 is slower (12.4 at 111) than what the new M3 is rated at stock (12.4 at 114).

Higher revving. Significantly.
The cars with cat-back and other JHM goodies show that the S4 hits peak power around ~6700 RPM (header cars may get a tad more), but the RS4 continues to make power well beyond 7000RPM and is still pretty strong close to 8k (I'd imagine ideal shiftpoint with a JHM RS4 would be around ~7700 RPM based on the trend that was seen on the S4 and comparison of dyno's before and after). So because of this ~1000 RPM overhead where power is being made, that means more gasses are being expelled in the same time frame vs the S4. This means it can benefit from the 2.75" exhaust, and probably leaves some room for it to grow (s/c for RS4).
It's a good question though, and I asked the same thing. I was thinking, hold on, did they just change their mind and the S4 is all wrong? Turns out that's not the case at all, but it's simply the difference in revs and exhaust gas being pumped through the system.

yeah it's already a 37/9 versus the S4's 35/9, I wonder if Audi makes any shorter gears? Though shorter gears would make the motor spin even higher cruising on the highway.
Basically if you satisfy any of the following: more revs, more cubic inches, more manifold pressure the bigger exhaust cross section you want. A stock motor S4 will be fine with a 2.5", built motor may want to look for something bigger. The 2.5" leaves wiggle room for more exhaust flow from VE improvements.

I guess that's your opinion of what the M3 does stock...i.e. you're ignoring the past 3 years of data that had the M3 high 12s.
The M3 is not 'rated at' anything FYI. Various journals test and publish their results and some have more success than others, but to quote the fastest ever as an absolute is irresponsible. The B6 S4 was 'rated at' 13.4 by your rationale...because that's what Motor Trend got out of it (even though everyone else tested it at around 13.8)
Road & Track in June 2008 tested the C63 vs. ISF vs. M3 vs RS4. The RS4 and M3 tied the quarter mile at 13.0, but the Rs4 was quicker to 60mph.
p.s. 12.4 isn't the RS4 record
engine speed is the biggest difference that jumps off the page, then there are the other factors beemer mentioned
i.e. 8250 rpm vs. 7000 rpm are very different animals. Just think about the exhaust pulses when you have the crank turning that much faster...you need more capacity to evacuate them. Further, the S4 has the worst exhaust manifold in the world...while the RS4 has pretty decent headers.
All in all, it makes sense. The math justifies it, so JHM tested it. Guess what? Faster than everyone.
Aren't the compression ratios also higher on the rs? (something like 11 or 12:1) if so wouldn't this lead to higher flow velocities -even at equal engine rpm- necessitating better flow capacity? School me, experts.
Well my intake manifold spacers came in today... surprise!! Just waiting on that exhaust now... should be another week or 2 I believe.
Pics to come soon..
Hey Dave, not sure if you got my PM or not. What needs to be done with the fuel lines to install these? Do they have enough slack, or is something else involved?
I may be up for these spacers when they are in wide release. Also interested in piggie OEM pipes, and maybe the tune depending on how iit performs on cars which still have the main cats. As far as the exhaust goes, if it looks, and sounds right, I'd be down for them too.![]()

Ah sorry about the PM.. I read it but couldn't respond at the time and completely forgot to get back to it..
Well it seems that it's as simple as installing the spacers in between the IM and heads... no other hardware to adjust things here or there.
They're 5/16ths thick (a hair over 1/4") .. so I think there is plenty of "wiggle" room with the fuel lines to make it.
I will be buying the Exhaust, Tune, Suspension and if they can manage to give me a setup that gets me 500 to the wheels on a slightly more aggressive than normal tune, I promised to invest in the super charger as well.

wow...that's pretty awesome retsu!
Mr. Hyde - at least one or two of their test runs with cats in place ran 12.5-12.6 with good mph at the 1/4 mile. The gains are there with piggies/tune. Like everything, you leave some behind going 2.5, but the tune I think will be pretty significant. I've driven an APR RS4...and APR/STASIS/GIAC S4s...they're all nothing like a JHM tuned car. Further, comparing stock to a JHM tuned RS4 is pretty funny. Just PM memeber 'B7S4' re: his experiences with piggies, a 2.5" catback and JHM's tune. He's ecstatic, and his logs showed pretty significant gains over his stock logs.
He's local to me, so we're going to go to the dragstrip in the spring so he can have a go.
Anyone know when JHM plans to release these 'go-fast' goodies? There has been tons of talk, but nothing yet. I know some folks have'em, but what about the rest of us?
If you want, you can put your name down and they'll send you some parts.
They like to test things. They have this specific methodology, unique to the Audi tuning world:
1. buy the car(s) they're selling parts for so they can be 'in the trenches' with the customer, and know the car inside out
2. test their parts to death on their own car(s) before they put them on their website for retail sales (or on customer beta cars)
3. share information on that testing with the public so they know what the parts are capable of (performance, not dynos) before they buy them
They've done all three. The fourth thing they like to do is have inventory available when they launch something formally...that way they don't get 42 orders for 2.75" exhausts when they have only 4 catbacks on hand and it takes a week to make the next 10.
As I said, contact them directly if you're serious...they'll set you up.
p.s. if you're ever in Toronto, the first 'customer car' with a JHM RS4 tune on it is apparently here...a member on this forum with the username b7s4
Thanks for this. I am familiar with JHM's process, I am definitely a fan. I'll probably wait until everything has been tested and is ready for release, not sure I like the idea of being a "Beta" user/test car?
I may have been in touch with the member out of T.O. I am actually in Ottawa, Ontario so not too far. I may contact him again and get his feedback etc. Otherwise, looks like I will have to hang tight!
yeah, that's why I explained their process...you won't be a beta / test car. That's why they bought an RS4...the Sprint Blue car Dan drives was the beta/test car. They've since installed the tune on a handful of customer cars already (guys who called them early).
As I said, if you're serious, call them, and they'll tune your car. If you're just thinking about it, or don't want to be one of the first guys, sit on the sidelines and watch the other guys for a while. There should be a bunch on the forums who get tuned so you can see what they say.![]()
Hey all...Its either my first or second post on this forum, but I am going to be more than happy to be the next guy vouching for JHm.
I placed my order for all my parts about 3 weeks ago, I am getting the following
2.75" Cat-Less Downpipes
2.73" Resonated catback exhaust, dual oval tips
Intake Spacers
Lightweight rotors
Carbon Cleaning
ECU Tune
Im stoked. I just crossed the 48k mile mark and my warranty is now shit, and Audi still refused to clean my carbon (not the thread for this debate if you think it doesnt exist, ive driven the car for 4 years and realize a bigger difference everytime). So the engine will be clean, and running like a damn race horse.
Im in China now but will be back in the states in late February to have everything installed. I plan on taking a weekend trip up from LA to Modesto to have everything done in a day, especially since there is nowhere to stay in Modesto.
Stay tuned!! (no pun intended)
^Nice, the car is gonna be a new beast with all that

Just log the delta between ambient and IAT. There is a block in VCDS for ambient temp. But come to think about it, that may not tell you much anyway. Unlike cheap, mass-produced cars, the RS4 has no temp sensor actually on or in the manifold. Its sits nicely on the MAF tube getting slow roasted by header heat. So even if the manifold is a few degrees cooler, the sensed IAT is unlikely to change. The only way a benefit could be detected would be a slight "enrichment" of the lambda correction due to the fact that actual inlet density is higher than what is being sensed, i.e., lambda correction goes from +1.0% to +2.0% with spacers, all else being equal. The hard part is the "all else being equal" part.

I just received my spacers today, look good. Going in for a clean week of March 14th, will go on then. I talked again to Dan via email today, we are going to get together in late April/Early may to do some dyno pulls on his JHM and my EPL car, and maybe do some 1/4 mile runs, and I may have them swap flash on my car from EPL to JHM for test purposes to see hat it does. Should be fun, want to head up to Central Valley sometime then? Its a 600 mile drive down for me, but will do it just because I enjoy the drive. So long as i only get one speeding ticket.
